Is Publishing On Medium Still Worth The Effort?

Is It Still Worth Publishing on Medium in Late 2024 and into 2025?

Medium has been my go to content platform since early 2023, in that time I’ve published over 350 articles.

But is it still worth publishing on Medium?

Is it still worth the effort?

Let’s dive into my personal experience with Medium and why hosting your own content might be the key to long-term success.

The Ups and Downs Of Medium

When I started taking Medium seriously in early 2023, my earnings saw steady growth.

By May 2024, I was earning $275 a month and growing by 50% each month. However, the numbers soon started to decline.

Fast forward to November, and the monthly earnings dropped to an estimated $70 per month.

The issue wasn’t the quality of my content or the number of followers (I have over 6,000). Instead, something about Medium’s algorithm felt broken.

The notifications I receive were limited to just a handful of the same accounts every day, I assume the same is happening to my content and the reach is no longer there, drastically reducing potential reader and engagement.

This change forced me to rethink how I use the platform.

The New Medium Strategy – A Dual Approach

Instead of treating Medium as my primary publishing hub, I’ve adopted a new strategy.

Own Your Content with a Blog

Writing directly on Medium is risky because you don’t control the platform.

By creating a personal blog, you have a central repository for your work.

Not only does this protect your content, but it also allows you to repurpose it for other platforms.

For example, I now write articles on my blog first and then import them to Medium. Using SEO plugins, I ensure my blog is recognized as the canonical source by Google, so my content remains indexed under my name and site.

Leverage Medium for Exposure

Medium still has value.

Once your blog post is ready, import it to Medium. It’s a simple process, just paste the link in the import section, and Medium formats the content for you.

This dual-publishing method allows you to reach Medium’s audience while keeping your content safe on your own platform.

Link to Other Platforms

Medium can act as a part of your content funnel. Include links to your blog, newsletter, Substack, or other platforms in your articles. For instance, I’ve grown my newsletter subscriber base to over 1,800 in just a few months by linking to it from my Medium stories.

Why This Approach Matters

Medium may not be the powerhouse it once was, but it’s still a valuable tool when used strategically.

Here’s why this approach works.

 Content Ownership.

If Medium’s reach diminishes further, the platform shuts down or it gets purchased by a batshit crazy billionaire, your blog ensures your work isn’t lost.

Flexibility.

By hosting your content on your blog, you can easily republish it to other platforms like LinkedIn, Bluesky, or Substack.

Monetization.

A blog and newsletter give you direct control over monetization.

You’re in charge whether through subscriptions, paid offers, or an all-access pass. Monetise your content with whatever works for you: affiliate offers, ads, sponsorships.

Building a Sustainable Content Ecosystem

By hosting your content you open up a load of possibilities for growing and monetising your business that you can’t do with Medium. For example, I can’t link directly to my Community on Medium and have to go through a page on my blog. But here on my blog, I can link directly to it

Here’s how to make this strategy work for you.

Write First for Your Blog

Treat your blog as the primary home for your content. Post consistently and ensure each piece is optimized for SEO (even though SEO is currently not worth the effort, that’s another story).

 Repurpose Strategically

Share your blog posts on Medium and other platforms to maximize reach. Use newsletters to explore topics more deeply and build a loyal audience. repurpose you content into short form posts for social media and consider videos for YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok

Monetise Effectively

Offer value-packed products like an all-access pass or bundle of related products,  combining courses, books, and premium content. Alternativly look at adding coaching or cohorts and don’t forget a community!

Promote these through your newsletter and blog.

Final Thoughts – Is Medium Still Worth It?

Yes—but not as your sole platform. Medium should be part of a broader strategy.

Use it to extend your reach, test content ideas and to see what resonates with your audience. Ensure you’re building a content ecosystem that you control. Combining a blog, Medium, newsletters, and other platforms allows you to future-proof your content strategy while growing your audience and income.
